Organised Club Runs
Every Sunday (except race weekends) XMTB organises a mountain bike outing covering all genders, abilities and age groups.
There are normally two groups:
A Run: This is often considered a training run and the speed will be fast. The group meets at the front gates of Stormont at 0930 SHARP and aims to be out for 3+ hours visiting trails, roads and hills(!) around Belfast, Newtownards and Lisburn.
The group may split into two depending on numbers and venture in alternative routes to the same destination. Keep an eye on the forum for which group is running. You should bring enough water and supplies to survive both runs:).
Social Run: This group meets in the Top car park of Lady Dixon at 0930 and cycles around Lady Dixon, Belvoir using the Tow Path for those extra miles. This run is more relaxed and all ages are represented from as young as 8years old. The route is often planned close to the car park, so you may opt-out at any time.
If you've been on a run, please discuss it here and post stats so that new members may decide which group is best for them.
Suggested Equipment
Everyone hates that mechanical and if you are lucky enough to have never had one...never say never!! Here is a list of items you should always carry with you and should at least know what they do:
You may add or remove from the list above and can carry as you feel fit: be it a Camelback, saddle bag or jersey pocket.
You will always get assistance when you have a mechanical but it helps to be self-sufficient. Robbie ran a class on basic bike maintenance at the start of the year for the kids. Ask for details.

- Spare tube: Make sure it is the correct size (usually 26" circumference. Junior bikes may be a 24") and pay attention to the valve type - Presta/Schrader.
- Pump: A pump is one of those awkward extras that you can never find a pocket for. If you regularly ride with a friend arrange to share the pump and carry on alternate weeks. Be sure that you both have the same valve types! A schrader-only pump will not work with a presta valve.
- Tyre Levers: These often come free with magazines and subscription and are needed to get your tyre off. They come in sets of 3 but 2 is all you will need.
- Foil Blanket: This is a small foil blanket that folds up to the size of a phone. Not many people carry these but it can be a welcome addition to your pack if someone falls in the hills or in a remote location.
- Water: Most people can survive with two water bottles although some prefer to carry a Camelbak. It's a personal preference.
- Food: Cereal bars and gels are small to fit in a jersey pocket and should always be carried. Eat and drink often to prevent fatigue.
- Mobile Phone: Make sure it is charged!
